Saving Lives Starts Before the Hospital: Join the Prehospital Blood Transfusion Movement
Across the United States, people are dying needlessly from severe bleeding. Whether in urban centers or remote communities, the leading cause of preventable death after trauma is uncontrolled hemorrhage—and nearly half of these deaths occur before patients reach the hospital.
In most areas, emergency responders are unable to administer blood transfusions due to regulatory hurdles and reimbursement barriers. As a result, blood products are rarely available on ground EMS vehicles, despite growing recognition of the need for earlier intervention.
“A growing number of ground and air medical EMS programs have successfully initiated blood programs in recent years, but more needs to be done to ensure patients in the U.S. who need prehospital transfusion are able to receive it, regardless of where they live.” — Dr. John Holcomb, Professor of Surgery, University of Alabama at Birmingham
To drive meaningful change, the Prehospital Blood Transfusion Coalition (PHBTC) has been formed. Guided by a multidisciplinary board of directors, the Coalition brings together stakeholders from across healthcare, EMS, policy, and industry. Velico is proud to be an active member and encourages others to lend their voice and expertise.
The Coalition is organized into focused teams working on:
Whether you’re a clinician, EMS leader, policymaker, or health advocate, there’s a place for you in this movement. To get involved or access the Coalition’s growing resource toolkit, reach out to chair@prehospitaltransfusion.org.
Together, we can make prehospital blood transfusion the standard—not the exception.
